The Sculpt Blog: A Beginner’s Guide to Running

A lady running.

Running can be daunting for many people, let’s look at how to set off on your journey the right way.

When I first started running, I had no idea what I was doing. I thought I just needed to lace up my sneakers and hit the pavement. But after a few exhausting, discouraging runs, I realised there was more to it. Running is as much about preparation and mindset as it is about movement.

The first step? Start slow. Seriously, don’t expect to sprint right out of the gate. A mix of walking and running is the best way to ease into it. I started with short jogs, gradually increasing my time and distance as my endurance improved. Trust me, patience is key.

Next, invest in a good pair of running shoes. I learned the hard way that the wrong shoes can lead to discomfort or even injury. Getting fitted at a running store made a world of difference—it’s worth it.

Hydration and nutrition matter too. I used to run on an empty stomach, and let’s just say, it wasn’t fun. A small snack beforehand and staying hydrated throughout the day helped me feel more energised and strong during my runs.

Most importantly, listen to your body. Some days will feel amazing, while others might be tough. That’s okay! Rest when you need to, stretch after every run, and don’t be too hard on yourself.

If you’ve been thinking about starting to run, just go for it. Set small goals, enjoy the process, and remember—it’s about progress, not perfection. Before you know it, you’ll be looking forward to your next run.
